The DOT Program is a mandatory process for any safety-sensitive employee (such as commercial drivers, pilots, pipeline workers, and transit employees) who violates DOT drug and alcohol rules.
What is the DOT SAP Program process?
Once you find a Substance Abuse Professional, you will have to complete an evaluation to determine whether you need education or treatment. After you satisfy the recommendation, you will have a follow-up evaluation and then take a DOT-certified drug test. If you test negative, you will then be eligible to return to duty. It is now up to the employer to administer the final step, which is follow-up testing for up to 5 years.
Why the DOT SAP Program Matters?
In an era of rising fentanyl-related deaths, increased marijuana use, and mounting mental health challenges, the DOT SAP Program is a preventive tool and an intervention strategy to help maintain public safety. It also allows employees to rebuild credibility, repair professional relationships, and confront any deeper issues that may be related to their substance use.
