What is a DOT SAP Evaluation?
The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) Return-to-Duty process is a regulatory requirement for commercial motor vehicle (CMV) drivers who have tested positive for drugs or alcohol, or who have violated other FMCSA drug and alcohol regulations.
When a driver fails a drug or alcohol test or violates other substance abuse regulations, they must cease driving immediately and undergo evaluation by a Substance Abuse Professional (SAP). The SAP will determine what steps the driver needs to take to resolve their substance abuse issue, which may include education, treatment, counseling, or other interventions.
Once the driver has completed the recommended treatment program and is deemed fit to return to duty by the SAP, they must undergo a return-to-duty test, which is another drug and alcohol test. If the test results are negative, the driver can then resume driving commercial vehicles, but they will be subject to follow-up testing as determined by the SAP.
Drivers and employers must follow the FMCSA return-to-duty process diligently to ensure the safety of everyone on the road.
